"SWEETEST COMEDY ROMANTIC"

#1 THE HOLIDAY (2006)

Director/Writer : Nancy Meyers
Cast : Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Jack Black

The Holiday is a romantic comedy. If you don't like romantic comedies, don't go and see it.
Two desperate women decide to switch homes for the holiday due to their failed relationships for two weeks. Iris Simpkin (Kate Winslet) is in love with her colleague, Jasper Bloom (Rufus Sewell) who is about to marry another woman. On the other side of the world, Amanda Woods (Cameron Diaz) realizes that the man whom she lives with has been cheating on her! The excitement begins when they experience completely new things in the strange places they live then. From a great mansion in LA to a small cottage in London, they can't help but surprisingly shock with the dramatic change. Amanda then finds herself enchanted by Iris' irresistibly handsome brother, Graham (Jude Law), while Iris meets Miles (Jack Black), an opportunist film composer. Will they finally find a new romance or just end up with more tears and broken hearts?
This movie contains a warm and natural dialogue, not to mention the heartfelt chemistry. The features of the handsome stars make everything looks picture perfect. Director Nancy Meyers states in the commentary that she bases elements in her movies off of real life events that she's experienced, for example the esophageal spasms that Cameron Diaz's character has, which is something Meyers use to experience herself. The Holiday is a warm and sweet romance. The theme might be a little bit shallow but it's enchantingly entertaining.

Director : P. J. Hogan
Writers : Tracy Jackson & Tim Firth
Cast : Isla Fisher, Hugh Dancy, Krysten Ritter, Joan Cussack

Shopping is a guilty pleasure. At least that's how Rebbeca Bloomwood (Isla Fisher) feels each time she swipes her credit card over..and over.. and over again. Before she finally ends up with several unplayable debts with the credit cards, Beck suffered from being a shopaholic. When she walks past a store, the mannequins talk to her and convince her that this particular item has the power to make her world feel better than ever. Not only two or five credit cards, she actually has twelve credit cards to shop all the way around, even for some unnecessary items. Becky's bestfriend, Suze (Krysten Ritter) is lost for words about Becky's compulsive addiction of shopping. To make it worse, with a little misunderstanding, she ends up working in a financial magazine where she writes a collumn called "The Girl in The Green Scarf", Ironically, she writes about some wise economic advices which are quite the opposite from her! Meanwhile, Becky's boss, Luke Brandon (Hugh Dancy) is a handsome wealthy man amused by her bizarre attitude. Despite his strict attitude, Becky then finds out that Luke can speak Prada Language. When things seem to get better in her work and romance, a persisting debt collector, Derek Smeath (Robert Stanton) never gives up chasing after Becky for her debts. Becky then questions her true ambitions and must determine if overcoming her "addiction" will bring her real happiness.
Personally I think that Confessions of a Shopaholic is fun and sincere. Its not just another chick flicks. I like Becky because she's not perfect. She might not have it all, but her style and spirit charm everyone around her. Instead of despising her for the shopping addiction, most women relate to her. This movie is definitely about to be a hit with the average female.

#3 THE PROPOSAL (2009)

Director : Anne Fletcher
Writer :
Pete Chiarelli
Cast :
Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds, Malin Akerman, Mary Steenburgen

In New York, Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock), a successful Canadian chief editor of the Ruick and Hunt Publishing is loathed by her coworkers due to her superiority. Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds), her executive assistant, has been working with her for three years with no complaint. When Margaret has problems with the immigration department and is threatened with deportation, she forces Andy to agree to marry her. Andrew agrees if she'll promise a promotion. They must pretend as a real couple who have been together for a long time. Margaret then reluctantly agrees to fly to far..far.. away Sitka in Alaska to visit Andrew's family. Surprisingly, Margaret is welcomed by his warm family. Soon after that, family dynamics begin with the tensions between Andrew and his father (Craig T. Nelson), Andrew's ex-girlfriend (Malin Akerman), and Andrew's dislike of Margaret. Then Margaret begins to feel like she belongs to something which she's been longing to have: a family. But a scheme is just a scheme. Will they be successful in pretending their fake engagement or will it come to reality that they don't need to fake it anymore?
Although the movie is quite predictable, since the trailer tells you just about everything you're going to see, nevertheless it was sweet. The Proposal is not going to win any Oscars nor it will become the favorite movie of all time but it does what exactly it's supposed to do which is to entertain you. If you are looking for realism then you may drop it, but if you want to escape for awhile and just enjoy a movie you don't have to think too much about then it's worth your time. The Proposal is the kind of movie that makes comedy romantic genre can make a big hit in Box Office.

#4 FIFTY FIRST DATES (2004)

Director : Peter Segal
Writer : George Wing
Cast : Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore, Rob Schneider, Sean Astin

Henry Roth (Adam Sandler) lives in a Hawaiian paradise. He never really cares about having a serious relationship. Then Lucy Whitmore (Drew Barrymore) comes with her adorably charming personality. They begin to feel the chemistry and decide to have a serious relationship. But it only lasts for one day because on the next day, Henry finds himself confused when Lucy can't recognize him. It's as is they haven't met before while they have. The same thing happens over and over again and Lucy always acts defensive each time Henry tries to approach her one way or another. This is the moment when Henry finally discovers that Lucy suffers from short term memory loss and can't remember each individual day. However, Henry won't stop making her fall in love with him all over again each and everyday. Everyday is a different plot, fight and argument in their journey of love...
50 First Dates, no matter all the overdone characters and the fact that Adam Sandler is probably poor in to act crying, is simply the best description of love ever, to literary win the heart of the one we love each day. Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore surprisingly show an easy chemistry between them that serve the movie well. This movie is quite enjoyable. It's not a great film but it's fun and it left me feeling pleasantly consent. 50 First Dates will not win any Oscars, but it will make you feel good watching it.

The Wedding Planner has everything you could ask from a romantic comedy. No matter how many times I watch it, I still find something to laugh about or to smile at. The characters are likable and charming as well as having a fine chemistry. This is a very simple movie and simple is a sweet and wonderful thing. You may ask yourself too about the nature of love itself. This is not a great film, it has its dull and silly moments but it can give you a fun and pleasant movie experience. So be careful 'cause you'll may fall in love with "The Wedding Planner".
